Daylight Savings

By Kristen H., TIWP Student

we fell back in november

the sun sets sooner
and i’m on my train home

a little sore, post practice
the windows fogged
car headlights bleeding into the dark
overpasses, telephone wires
passing by

and outside
the sky turns purple
then pink, then orange
then nothing

the last bit of daylight
caught between rooftops
before it slips away

the train is packed
shoulders touching
voices blending into one
someone’s music leaking
through their headphones

but it’s quiet

i watch my reflection
come and go in the glass
the city passing through me
and me through the city

stop after stop
the same familiar lights
the same roads home

and for a little while
i don’t have to be anywhere
other than here

the busiest time of the year, the easiest part of my day.
