superstitious

i believe good things come to those who wait
to those who are kind and patient.

i think everything happens for a reason
it’s hard to remember in the moment
but the day you look back and think
“huh, i was lucky”
i like to think it was because i waited

fate is a funny thing.
there are those who dedicate themselves
to defying her power
but how do you defy fate?
if something is prevented from happening,
was it ever going to happen to begin with?

all the little things that happened
for me to be where i am now. like
the mornings i almost stayed in bed,
the conversations i almost didn’t have,
the places i almost didn’t go.

a life can be made up of so many almosts.
doors we walked past without noticing,
people we met on the late train,
things we said without knowing
someone would remember them.

fate isn’t grand.
i wonder how many moments i’ve lived through
without knowing they were changing me.

we get to arrange our memories into a story,
draw lines between dots that never knew
were meant to connect.

tomorrow, i’ll wake up
i’ll rush through the morning,
complain about the weather.
and i’ll keep waiting for something to happen.
