To Be Human

By Mia Ford, TIWP Student

Humans were made to grow up and live life, to enjoy moments and memories. Computers, on the other hand, were made for none of that. Computers and AI can’t grow. Their software is programmed. Then—boom—AI, AI that supposedly answers all your questions. But AI only knows what humans programmed them to know and understand. They only know what they are supposed to take in. For example, how big is space? How does your brain have intuition? How did time come to be? How do feelings feel? No one knows, especially not AI. AI can’t feel the breeze when the weather changes. It can’t feel or see itself. It will never be able to hear beautiful symphonies or look back at memories. AI can’t connect with others. AI can’t slide down the rail of their home’s stairs smiling from ear to ear until the force of gravity and speed pushes you down to where you meet the ground. AI can never understand the feeling of gratitude when you give someone a gift or make another person happy. AI can’t feel. It can’t feel any sort of emotion. It can’t feel the excitement of collecting shells that wash upon the rocky, grainy, sand, when each grain touches your feet and you carry the shell as if it was a prize given to just you. AI can describe, but never see, feel, touch, and taste the true perks and special moments that come with growing up and being fully human.
