Biophilia

By Mira Hubly, TIWP Student

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “biophilia” was a term first coined by the naturalist Dr. Edward O. Wilson to describe the innate human desire for contact with nature.

I want to let the rain drench my hair, cool me off, and cleanse my skin.
I want to take an ice bath in the snow
for the wild thrill and refreshing zing.
I want flowers to sprinkle off of trees
so I can twirl in their beautiful storm.
I want to hear the crunch of leaves as more fold into the earth.
I want to climb through the mud without worry
and spread it over my skin to cleanse my pores.
I want to fall asleep to the water’s gentle ripples
under the warmth of the sun.
I want to watch the sun’s rays spilling through the deep clouds.
I want to glide down steep peaks’ plush snow and soar through the air.
I want a butterfly to land on my finger.
I want to fly away, too.
I want to run through the forest’s layers of green
into the depths of nature.
